Mammillaria elongata

Description:

The Mammillaria elongata is indigenous to Mexico (Guanajuato, Hidalgo and Querétaro). Traditionally, its hooked spines were used as fish hooks in Mexico. Stems are narrow and elongated. As this species matures, tight clumps of erect, ascending, prostrate or recumbent stems form. Spination is typically variable from pale cream to dark reddish-brown in color. Flowers are small, bell shaped and take on a whitish, pale yellow or pinkish color with pink mid stripes. Flowers form at upper portion of the plant.

Happily, the Mammillaria elongata is a very easy species to cultivate. No special treatment required. The more light provided (without burning the specimen), helps to encourage heavier spine formation. Moreover, this species is an excellent plant for container growing. It maintains a manicured appearance 365 days a year. Cold greenhouses and frames work well.
