Agave angustifolia var. Marginata

Description:

The Agave angustifolia var. marginata, is an aesthetically pleasing, neatly growing plant. It is considered to be a small - medium sized Agave with a dense, round rosette of leaves born from a short trunk. It forms clumps with an approximate height and diameter of 2-4 feet. The length of this Agave's leaves is highly variable depending upon environmental conditions.

The Agave angustifolia -v- marginata's leaves can easily reach lengths of 2 or more feet. This plant has stiff, sword-shaped and concave blue to blue-greenish leaves. They are often curved or curled back, especially at the edges of each leaf (revolute). At their widest point, the Agave's leaves have an approximate diameter of 2-4 inches. Moreover, they are furnished with thin, marginal teeth and a subulate-conical terminal spine. Additionally, each leaf has a marginal band of bright white, with occasional cream stripes.

Synonyms:

1. Agave letonae var. marginata Trel.
2. Agave vivipara cv. marginata (hort. ex Gentry) P.I.Forst.

The Cactus King's Grow Log:

Year - 2010

1. Agave tolerated colder temperatures reasonably well
2. Lowest recorded temperature was 29 degrees Fahrenheit
3. Agave's center burned, however, the plant survived and came back

Year - 2011

1. The same Agave was covered with a plastic tarp during a prolonged, unexpected cold snap
2. During said cold snap, the lowest recorded temperature was 22 degrees Fahrenheit, bringing ice as an added variable
3. Despite the presence of both lower temperatures and ice (compared to the winter months of 2010), the Agave's leaves only experienced minimal burning
4. Our conclusion, utilizing plastic tarps to protect the Agave angustifolia -v- marginata during colder months and/or cold snaps is vital
