Description: 

Small columnar succulent, forming clumps with thin shoot axes, small flower heads, and knotty roots. The leaves are arranged in 5 to 7 lines, the stems are angular to ribbed, and the actual leaf blades are reduced to tiny, thorny scales, while the succulent, reddish brown leaf bases are fused to the shoot axis and descend it.
